When accordionist Ionel “Ionitsa” Manole left Taraf de Haïdouks to set up Clejani Express it was with the stated desire to urbanise the rural sounds of traditional Roma music. Along with his singer wife Viorica, the Romanian built a sound that has made the group one of the country’s most popular. After years of national success, the band brought out its first international release in 2007, called A Devla.
